Ear Corrections

Protruding ears are a common reason for being teased and reduce the number of hairstyle options. Sometimes, only one ear is „out of shape“. Protruding ears can result from abnormal folding of the ear itself, irregular growth of isolated regions of the ear during development or combinations hereof. Plastic-surgical corrections of these abnormal ears can be performed as an outpatient procedure. The typical folds of the ears are recreated and the size is corrected symmetrical to the contralateral ear or to a standard size and geometry if both ears are affected.

I use a combination of several techniques that are proven for a long-time to achieve this. The skin incision of a typical ear correction (otopexy) lies hidden behind the ear in the vast majority of cases.

Large sloppy earlobes, old, wrinkled earlobes with a loss of youthful volume or torn-out piercing holes can be corrected by easy plastic surgical procedures (usually under local anesthesia).

In adults, ear corrections can be performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation. In children I prefer a short general anesthesia to have a calm and relaxed atmosphere for both the young patient and the surgeon.

After the operation, a head band needs to be worn for three weeks day and night and then for three weeks only at night to protect the sutured cartilage and to allow undisturbed healing of all structures.
