For the operation, the zones of fat removal are marked on your body while standing. In the OR, the tissue is then infiltrated with a special solution to assist in the subsequent liposuction. This is performed through tiny incisions in hidden areas with special cannulas. Depending on the number of regions and the volume of removed fat, liposuction procedures can be performed either as an outpatient procedure or as a short inpatient stay for 1-3 nights. Usually, the operated region must be dressed with a special compressive garment or tight underwear for at least 6 weeks to allow a fast reduction of the swelling and optimal shaping of the newly contoured body region.
A liposuction is only successful, if the stretched skin still has some elastic properties and can retract into its new shape. If striae (tears in the skin) or overstretched skin are present, surgical removal of the redundant skin folds or a combination with liposuction is preferable to liposuction alone. The latter is also known as body contour surgery.
